March DPiP Event Round Up

The meeting in March was yet again to a packed house. We changed the layout of the seating which allowed us to get more seats in. Many thanks to the bewiched team for helping with the set up and making our jobs so much easier.

600_434899194The first talk of the evening was from Stuart Payn of Blok Collective.  Stuart talked about their latest project which was to develop and produce a piece of high profile and engaging public art to uplift and regenerate the area between Cowgate and the Train Station, as part of the larger regeneration project of Peterborough city centre.  Stuart went through the design and planning  process which included sketching with a pencil, converting to digital, 3D modelling, and more hand sketching.  He showed us images of the progress on site and the difficulties they encountered when working outside and on such a large scale, having over 1000 square metres of wall space to paint!

Be sure to pop down to the underpass and check out this artwork for yourself!

Win an A2 print from blok collective in a sealed auction!

600_434911153Stuart also very kindly donated an A2 print of his work to DPiP. We have decided that the best and fairest way to decide who gets to win this lovely artwork is to hold a sealed auction.

Please place your bids via DM on twitter to @DPiPBoro or you can email a bid in to us.  Closing dates for bids will be Friday 13th March 2015 (lucky for someone!). All proceeds from this will go back into the running of DPiP.

For any regulars of the DPiP meetings you will know that we #feedthegeeks and Cafe Clarkes did not let us down! This mid way break was a great time to grab a quick bite to eat, drink, catch up with old friends, and make new friends.

600_434899211We like to keep things varied when it comes to speakers and topics so it was over to Claire from Datify for the second talk.  Claire’s talk covered ‘good writing’ techniques.  There was a lively debate afterwards on whether people should be writing with a view to keywords and accommodating the ‘robots’.  In conclusion, the message we should take away from this evening is that there are three fundamental things a good writer should be checking for. They are facts, grammar, and spelling.

Write with confidence, flair, and make it interesting – Claire Louise Sheridan, datify

As a final mention, we had Terry of City Lan Social who wanted to tell us all about a very exciting gaming/technology event happening in August 2015 over three days. Terry would like to hear from anyone who is interested in being part of the focus group. You can contact him via @citylansocial | terry@citylan.co.uk or text 07747606996.

DPiP have been offered an opportunity to get involved in this event and we are already making plans and plotting something epic. So watch this space!

The team at DPiP make putting on these events look easy peasy but without our sponsors and the wonderful speakers we couldn’t make it happen at all. Heart Internet have kindly sponsored us for awhile now. If you ever need hosting or domains it is worth giving them a call as they offer a great service and decent prices.

January Event Round Up

bewitchedWow what an amazing turn out for the first DPiP event of 2015 at our new location.  I think we can safely say that Bewiched Coffee Shop on Bridge Street is an ideal venue as it was informal and cosy though not too cosy for any claustraphobics amongst us.  It was nice to see people turning up, being greeted by the offical welcomer Andy and then grabbing a coffee ready for the event to start.

dowsocialThe first talk of the evening was from Kristian Downer of Dow Social on ‘Why Social Media is easier than getting a six pack’.  Lots of references to six packs in this talk and it worked really well as the theory behind aiming for a six pack is the same attitude you should take when managing Social Media for your business.  Kristian had a welcoming way about him and there were jokes aplenty which helped everyone to understand that you need to keep going with Social media and not give up half way and end up with a three pack instead.

banyantreeFor any regulars of the DPiP meetings you will know that we #feedthegeeks and the sponsor for the food this event was the Banyan Tree in the city centre, they did not disappoint!  This mid way break was a great time to catch up with people after the festive period and discuss the first talk in more depth with Kristian. As well as stock up on coffees and teas plus the odd cake I noticed!

rowlandWe like to keep things varied when it comes to speakers so it was a bit more practical for our second talk of the evening.  The lovely Roland from Think3dPrint3d was kind enough to bring one of his 3d printers along to the meeting so that we could see it in action. And with a great introduction to 3D printing and electronic design I know that it had many of us thinking about how we could use this technology within our own businesses.

heartinternetThe team at DPiP make putting on these events look easy peasy but without our sponsors and the wonderful speakers we couldn’t make it happen at all.  Heart Internet have kindly sponsored us for awhile now and they even supplied cool goody bags to give to everyone at the end.  If you ever need hosting or domains it is worth giving them a call as they offer a great service and decent prices.

So to sum up the first DPiP event of the year it was bloody marvellous! So now to start organising February’s meeting which is on Wednesday 4th February and you can join HERE.

Event Details:

The event runs from 7pm on Thursday, June 5th, 2014. We’ll be at the Eco Innovation Centre from 7-9pm, and our rough schedule includes 2-3 talks (15 minutes each), a Q&A session with the chance to submit anything you like anonymously for the whole group to answer (Keep it clean!), and from 9pm we’ll adjourn to the nearby Solstice pub for drinks and more chatting for anyone that fancies it.

Our events are not-business networking – they’re a friendly, informal gathering for anyone with any kind of digital interest. Designers, developers, database admins, business owners, marketers, journalists, bloggers, sysadmins, security specialists, conversation rate optimisers, and more are all welcome and have attended DPiP recently.

You don’t have to be based in Peterborough – anyone is welcome. If you’re stuck for transport, let us know and we’ll probably be able to help with lifts within reason.
